Lecture

Week 1

We had a physical class. Mr Fauzi briefed us on what we were going to do for our assignments and how our course module is going to be like. We were then given an exercise to complete to gauge our preferences or style when it came to design. For more information, visit DPI Week 1 - Practical.

Week 2

In week 2, we were taught about composition and some advice on how to create good composition, such as following the golden ration or rule of thirds. This week we had more students in one class so we had to migrate to the design studio on the 1st floor :D. For more information, please visit DPI Week 2 - Collage Elements.

Week 3

This week lecture was online due to the Raya holidays. During this weeks lecture, Mr Fauzi taught us how to use Photoshop to select and crop out images from images. To select an image that we wish to crop out, we could either use the pen tool (for shapes with multiple colour) and the magic pen tool ( used to highlight flat colours only). After that we could just copy and past them onto our canvas.  Visit DPI Week 3/Compositional Collage for more info.

Week 4

This week Mr Fauzi introduced us the adjustment layer such as brightness/contrast, levels, curves, exposure and the selective layer. He also introduced us to the filters in photoshop like hue/exposure and colour balancing our collage. Visit DPI  Week 4/Practical Digital Collage for more info.

Week 5

This week was a holiday.

Week 6

This week we learnt how to use the quick selection tool, layer mask, filters and colour correction. Visit DPI Week 6 Practical for more info.

Week 7

This week we were taught how to recolour a black and white image as well as double exposure. Please visit DPI week 7 for more info.

Project 1

Physical Collage Design

For the physical collage, we were asked to cut out pictures from newspaper or magazines. I only had newspapers, so I cut out things that I found interesting and useful for the idea of my collage. I also went on Pinterest that I want to use for the collage.

Digital Collage Design

For this part, we were given a set of pictures by Mr Fauzi to cut out in Photoshop. With those picture we were suppose to make a digital collage out of them. Same with the physical collage, we were required to make 3 composition for this collage also, and one composition was chosen by Mr Fauzi. (For more info about them visit Week 4/Practical Digital Collage)

Reflection

My experience during this project was relatively good. I got to learn how to use Photoshop. Other than the lecture videos and tutorial that was given by the lecturer, I could also Google question of how to use Photoshop online and that helped me a lot. Overall, I enjoyed doing the recolouring exercise as I got to colour it however I wanted as long as it made sense.

My observations during this project was that I should work on my compositions more. I personally feel that my compositions are lacking. Other than that, I also observed that every one of my friends have a different kind of vision? or style that they are going for. That is why even when given the same materials we all came up with different designs. I have observed that Photoshop is easier and simpler to use compared to other Adobe software.

My findings are that composition is important in a design. The design is easier on the eyes if it has a good composition. Good composition helps leads the viewers eyes to the focal point of the design.  Lastly, Finding a good colour combo can help bring the picture together.
