Week 1 - Practical
Lecture/Instructions
We had a physical class. Mr Fauzi briefed us on what we were going to do for
our assignments and how our course module is going to be like. We were then
given an exercise to complete to gauge our preferences or style when it came
to design.
Things that were to be done:
- Create an e-portfolio blog
- Create a Pinterest board for DPI
- Find 3 graphic design work on Pinterest and explain why we like them
Practical
I scrolled through Pinterest to find graphic designs that I like and this is
what I found. The link for my Pinterest board is
here.
1. First picture chosen ( I liked it's bright colours)
Figure 1.1
Karaoke Night
poster
I was attracted to the colours used in this poster. The green, pink, red
and yellow colour combo would seem very chaotic in most cases, but
because the values of the colours are almost similar, it seems more
cohesive? The chaotic nature of the colours also works for the poster as
the design itself is very chaos evoking. The poster's unhinged(cause the
jaw is unhinged haha get it) design reminds me of Jacqueline Wilson's
books, which are more often than not, very unhinged.
The poster is written in French based on Google translate. It is
promoting a karaoke night happening on 5th March at I assume
RDC DU 6B(an apartment or something similar to it) and Quai de Seine(banks of
river). It was stated on the artist site that this poster was for TAG!.(artist :camillefoucou)
2. Second picture chosen (I like the meaning behind it :D)
Figure 1.2
The Seep
The flowers in the design really stood out to me due to the high
contrast of the flowers with the dark background. The typography done in
this design does not take attention away from the flowers and the hands.
I feel like making the letters the same colour with some of the flowers
helps make the design look more appealing to the eye.
I initially didn't really like how there's a random flower on the top
right corner, but after reading the summary of the book and watching one
review about it, I feel like this could be about the main character in
the book who chases her now deceased wife who is now a baby(seen in the
giant red flower reaching out for the small yellow flower). Upon further
research, the red flower looks like a red gerbera(don’t take my word for
it, botany is not my strong suit) which means unconscious love or to be
fully immerse and surrounded with love( the main character who loves her
dead wife so much and is now in grief) while the yellow flower look like
a daffodil. Yellow daffodils means rebirth which could represent the
main character's wife who has now been reborn as a baby.
But I might be reading too much into it and am spouting nonsense now. I
know nothing about the novel but from a purely aesthetic viewpoint, I
really like the flowers in the design coupled with the multiple hands,
it gives of a very mysterious vibe, which I very much dig.
3. Third picture chosen(I like the goofy little person in the pic)
This is a poster for the album Plantasia, which is an album with music
for plants. I like this design because you clearly tell what kind of
music is in the album(spoiler it is music for plants). I find it
interesting how the design connects the plant to music device to show us
how plants actually listens to music. Other than that the goofy little
person in the picture also appeals to me. Also, I like the music from
this album and am inclined to be bias to this design.
