Instructions

Task

To-do list:
  • Identify 3 game ideas
  • Identify game references for those ideas
  • Identify visual references for those ideas
  • Sketch out some characters from those ideas
  • Record a video presentation of your game ideas

Before Ideation/Game references

Before I started thinking of any game ideas, I downloaded some game to play so that I have a rough understanding of how more 2D platform games are.

Figure 1.1 Deleted games played (left) vs games downloaded that I ended up really liking lol (right) (22/10/24)

Figure 1.2 Nameless cat (top) and Cats are liquid (bottom) (22/10/24)

Some of the games I downloaded, I ended up really liking the game mechanics, level architecture, art style and storyline. 2 of the games I kept playing were:
  • Cats are Liquid
  • Nameless Cat
I will probably reference some of their trap layouts for my game.

A few other games that I would reference would probably be Super Cat Tales 2 and Fairly Odd Parents: Woah Baby game.

Game Ideas

I then came up with 3 game ideas.
  • Fairy of the Year (leaning more towards this idea)
  • Cat's Journey Home
  • Pirate Adventure

1. Fairy of the Year

This game was inspired by the cartoon show, Fairly Odd Parents. I mainly took inspo from the tooth fairy in that show.

Overview:
  • This would be a 2D-pixel action-adventure platform game.
  • In the game, you will follow a tooth fairy as they collect teeth from houses.
Storyline:
You are a tooth fairy aiming for the 'Fairy of the Year' award. This award is given to the fairy that managed to collect the most tooths that year. You are currently a few teeth away from beating the first runner-up for the award and must now work hard to collect a few more teeth.

Mechanics:
  • Objectives: To collect 3 teeth per level to unlock the door to the next level.
  • Enemies: Mom (butterfly net; short-ranged attacks), Das (gun; long-ranged attack)
  • Obstacles: Spikes, moving platforms, maybe projectiles (TBD)
  • Character attack: Fairy Dust; puts the enemies to sleep (short-range attack), tranquillizer dart; maybe making this a collectable item (long-range attack)
  • Chances: 3 hearts, checkpoints, tranquillizer darts collection
Levels:
  • Level 1: Interior of a house; Mom + obstacles
  • Level 2: Interior of house; Mom + dad + obstacles
  • Level 3: Final Boss; a teeth thief (a tooth fairy) who is trying to steal your collected teeth so that they can win the award.
Visual references/Game references: Pls view the document or slides attached in the Final Submission section.

Old Slides, Presentation & Game Document

After consulting with Sir on the day of the submission date, I was told to elaborate more on my ideas as well as to record my presentation. Cries

Attached below are the old game document, slides and presentation video.

Updating the Game Doc, Slides and Presentation Videos

For the newly elaborated game document, I followed my friend, Warith, document structure. Of course, I amended it based on what I wanted to include. The things that I included in the new document were:
  • Storyline/Story Progression
  • Characters
  • Gameplay
  • Art Style/Visual References
For the storyline, I got some feedback from Sir to follow the storyline arch that he had taught in class. This included the Introduction, the Conflict, the Climax and the resolution.

Final Submission

Please view the Game Document for the full storyline and not presentation slides (slides have the summarized storyline)

Feedback

Week 5:
  • You can focus on the fairy idea and the cat idea. Please try to elaborate more on the storyline and mechanics. You can refer back to my lecture slides on the story guide and mechanics to make the story and gameplay.

Reflection

Honestly, I struggled really hard to come up with ideas. All my ideas are basically the same thing but with a different story. I was trying to keep it simple, but there is no difference in the end lmao.

Hopefully, when I'm creating the game I will be able to get inspiration and add more mechanisms into the game.
