Experience:

Assignment 1 (Proposal):
The general experience with this assignment was unpleasant and unsatisfactory. I had no idea what I was doing and had no example to follow. This was very much me groping around in the darkness and hoping for the best. Assignment 1 was also my and my classmate's introduction to research. After having the scope of our research limited to our specialization, I scurried around trying to read articles on what topic to carry out my assignment. However, due to the deadline, and other tasks taking up my attention, I settled on a topic. It was only after the deadline of the assignment did I think of topics that I would have liked to do. However, I genuinely did not have to brainpower nor the time to change my topic, so I was stuck with what I had.

Assignment 2 (Critical Review):
Critical review, what exactly is that? My experience with the critical review assignment was worse than assignment 1. Because my topic on Netflix and user experience is a very hard topic to measure, there was not much relevant research paper I could find on the topic. 1 and a half critical review in, I realised that the MIB said ‘research articles’ not case studies, not journals. The articles I had chosen were not research articles. This led me to spiral and panic. I pulled through, but this assignment was extremely stressful.

Assignment 3(Primary Data):
This assignment was the least stressful one. All the hard work of researching was gone, and what was left was data collection and analysis. The only part that had my blood level rising was collecting enough responses for my method.

Overall, this is my first true experience with research. It was stressful, but I am now aware of the things to be done if I want to pursue research in the future.

Observation:

Assignment 1 (Proposal):
The entire time I carried out this assignment, I have observed that research requires time, a lot of time for it to provide value. It also requires a lot of feedback from people who know how to write research. I observed that it is also important to narrow down the research topic so that we have a more specific topic to focus on.

Assignment 2 (Critical Review):
I noticed that when carrying out the critical review, some of the articles related to my topic were not translated into English. This was unfortunate because I felt like the information inside those articles would benefit my research. Other than that, I observed that having a well-structured paper makes it easier for the audience to read and retain information. Finally, I realised that the limitations of a paper can be used as part of its ‘weakness’ or drawbacks.

Assignment 3 (Primary Data):
One thing I have observed in this task was that when you are doing survey questions it is important to make the questions as straightforward to understand as possible. This reduced the chances of survey abandonment. I also noticed that having a large network of people is important in collecting data. You also have to be shameless enough to ask distant contacts to answer the survey.

Overall, I have noticed that to carry out research a lot of reading and referencing to others works is needed. For the data collection and analysis, it is helpful to reach out to communities or groups that are related to your survey topic to collect data.

Findings:

Overall, this module provided me with the basic knowledge and information needed to start a research. Doing everything in 14 weeks was an anxiety-inducing experience. It also taught me how to deduce finding and analyse the data given to me. Other than that, assignment 2 made me focus more on the details of a paper to see what are its good points.

This module filled me with a lot of regret. Looking back, I would have done a lot of things differently, especially choosing a research topic. I wished I had placed more focus on this module and properly chosen a research topic instead of rushing to finish it. This resulted in less than optimum work and looking back at it, I am made aware of how poorly written this work is. Given the chance and time, I would do this again for a different topic, and place more research into it.
