Task

Project 2 A

This task involved us forming groups to film shots and then individually assembling them.

Group Forming

We formed groups one week before the shooting date. We had 2 groups. One group was filming scenes from the movie 'BEEF' while the other was from the movie 'SILENT. I was put into the 'BEEF' group, or group B.

I was an actor, again. Because no one wants to be an actor. I am an actor yet again. Yes.

Prep before shooting

Before the shooting date, Mr Martin took the whole class down to the studio to show us the basics of filming. We filmed a short scene.

After that, Sir told us all to prepare for the shooting and get the script, props, outfits and set location decided by then. The producer went and collected the equipment from Sir on Friday. I was then contacted by the art director about the clothes I needed to wear and some props I needed to bring. The probs included my glasses and some earings.

Later, I realized that the director hadn't given me the script yet, so I contacted them and we decided to come up with the script together. I had initially wanted to make the storyline about a cannibal who was going to eat her partner but was found out by this dude. But the script that was green-lit was about the girl stealing the gay man from his gay partner. Slay.

Shooting the shots

We shot the scenes on Tuesday. The camera person came late lmao. But other than that, things went relatively smoothly. I was the actor, so I did not do much in terms of the production other than acting.

Post-Production editing

After all the video clips and audio clips were uploaded, I listened and watched each of them and labelled them accordingly. After that I analyzed some movie trailers to gain some inspo into how they set up the trailer because I'm going to be honest, I had no idea what to do with the storyline.

The trailers that I looked at were PEARL, THE LOBSTER, and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Finally, I scripted the trailer/short clip for the video. The plot would be as follows:
  1. Touching face scene
  2. Omg thanks, babe scene
  3. Girl waving finger
  4. Man on the phone call in distress
  5. MCU of girl waving a finger saying 'Yes I did it'
  6. Distress man again but the camera zooms in on him
  7. Phone notif scene
  8. Girl say 'What is he doing at my place'
  9. Cuts to 'YOU STOLE MY MAN'
  10. Then to man saying 'What no how'd they know'
  11. Distress man again but this time the music fades.

Finally, I put all the video clips and audio clips that I wanted into Premier Pro. I first started off by synching all the audio that I wanted to use with the video clips. Some of the audio was not usable due to high background noise, so I omitted them. Audios that could be salvaged, I added DeNoise to it to reduce the white noise. Some of the clips were not at the angle that I desired, or they were not centered. So I used the rotation and scale tool to make them to the shots that I had in mind.

I also blurred out the extras in two scenes cause I felt like they took focus away from the person speaking.

We were taught how to color grade and correct the clips. So I applied those adjustments to the shots to make sure that they had a uniform color grade?? Sir also asked us to add in a rolling credit. So I followed the tutorial he gave and made the rolling credit.

Project 2(b)

To-do list:
  • Shoot a tik tok video of yourself
  • Fill out the slides with your proposal
Initially, I had wanted to do a horror-based tiktok. However, after filming the clips and assembling them, I did not like how they turned out. So I redid my proposal, and decided to change it to a tiktok about how I'm tired.

Unfortunately, I had trashed the horror tiktok video as it was taking up too much space in my laptop and Google drive before making this blog, so I have no evidence of that work.

Filming

After deciding on what I wanted to film for the tiktok, I decided to start filming. I had planned out 7 scenes in my head, one involving me placing my phone in the closet to film a shot of me sliding the closet door open.

I had tried to take an overhead shot, but I did not have an overhead tripodstand. I tried to improvise with what I had, but the shits turned out too dark to be used as I wanted to film a scene of me in complete darkness.

Editing

After getting the shots I liked, I uploaded them to Google Drive so I could get the videos onto my laptop. I then imported them into Premier Pro. Disclaimer, I am writing this blog for the task way after the deadline it, so I seem to have deleted the Premier Pro file. But I did use Premier Pro to edit this video. Update I found the file, but all the linked videos have been deleted.

Moving on, after importing all the necessary files, I started adding zoom-ins to make the video seem more lively. This was done with the scale and position option. I also centred some of the clips that were not centred properly.

After putting all the clips together, I realised that one of my shots was not how I wanted it to be, there was not enough space in it, so I refilmed that specific scene again.

After that I added in the text and added the necessary transitions for the text. Colour correction and grading is not my forte, so I went to YouTube to see how people usually edit their videos/pics.

After that, I added in the audio. I realised that there was profanity in the org audio, I did not know if that would be accepted, so I went onto free sounds and downloaded a beep sound effect. I then cut out the curse word and added in the beeping sound.

Reflection

My experience with the video production shoot was nice. My teammates were all really nice, so shooting with them was pleasant. The editing part was not such a pleasant experience. As we were advised not to place the video clips exactly the same as the trailer, I had a hard time coming up with a plot for the trailer. Colour correction and grading was also a hard thing for me. Maybe this was just my lack of experience or research who knows. Meanwhile, filming the tiktok itself was a stressful experience. Having to reshoot because the clips did not turn out as planned was very detrimental to my motivation. However, I had fun with the editing for the tiktok as I know what direction I wanted to go in.

One thing that I observed while doing the video production shoot was that having a good plot or script is important. Hence, making a plot that makes sense could increase the audience's interest in the video. Meanwhile, for the tiktok I observed that filming a tik tok requires a lot of work, yes, but its was also fun to film short-form content once.

One thing I learned from this task was that I need to improve my colour grading and colour correction skills. As it is, it seems my skill level for said skills are non-existent. However, this tasks asldo did teach me the fundamentals of video editing which I appreciate.
