Lectures

Week 4
This week we talked about Mise En Scene. It was something used in theater and was slowly adapted into movies. It refers to the visual elements of a scene in a movie and how it is arranged.

After the lecture, we were briefed on our next task which required us to shoot scenes in 2 groups. I was put into group B. Our group was tasked with recreating scenes from the movie 'Beef'. I initially wanted to be the boom operator but someone put their name down before me so I got stuck with actor :D(3rd task in which I have to act, I'm not taking theater pls stop)

After that Mr.Martin brought us to the shooting studio to teach us how to operate the equipment for our next task. I was the actor so I did not get to learn much since all I had to do was act, but I did kacau the other members of my team.

We shot 2 test scenes but I do not currently have the footage.

Task

Exercise 1

For this task, we were given a clip from the movie MUNICH with no audio and were asked to add audio in.

After the tutorial class by Mr.Martin, I went and did the spreadsheet 1st. I also got all the audio I needed before putting it into Premier Pro.

Figure 2.2 Spreadsheet

After completing the spreadsheet, I recorded the voice lines. It was really bad so I will not let you hear the original one. After recording the voice lines, I pitch shift it higher or lower depending on the character.

After that, I started adding in the hard sounds and ambiance. I realized that I missed out some of the ambiance and hard sounds, as well as a sighing voice line. So I went back to find some more audio.

Exercise 2

This exercise is called sound shaping. Things to do for this exercise:
  • record a voice line that's at least 5 seconds
  • put the voice line in adobe audition
  • make the voice sound like a phone call
  • make the voice sound like it's coming from inside a closet
  • make the voice sound like it's coming from a toilet
  • make the voice sound like it's coming from a cave
  • make the voice sound alien or orc

Recording the voice line

As the recording had to be 5 seconds long, I decided to quote one of my favorite shows "Derry Girls". The line was, "OMG! It's Bouncer from Neighbors. I thought he was dead.". This line would have no meaning to you unless you are a fan of said show.

After deciding what line I wanted, I got to recording. I had a few takes because I did not like how it sounded. I eventually landed on a voice line that sounded okay to me.

Sound Shaping in Audition

After getting the voice line, I imported the file to audition. Then I started editing.

Telephone sound

For this audio, I first put in the preset 'Telephone-Reciever' from the FFT filter. From there, I added the in EQ and tried to edit the EQ based on the FFT filter. Initially, I had tried to edit the audio without any reference, but I was struggling, which was when I decided to use a reference. Of course, I made sure to off the FFT filter preset when I exported the audio file.

A voice from inside a closet

For this section, I recorded a clip of my voice from inside a closet. After that, I used that clip as a sound reference. I knew it had to sound muffled, but not too soft because it was just a closet. However, the recorded sound clip wasn't enough to help me, so I went onto Google and searched up how to make a muffled sound with an EQ. There I learnt that you had to lower the high-end frequency to get the muffled sound.

Voice from inside a toilet

For this sound, I knew it had to be reverb. But the reverb should not be too strong because its a toilet. I also used the convolution reverb for reference for this one. I chose the preset large bathroom. Then I, used the sound as a base for my reverb editing and added on other elements that I thought would make it sound nicer. Again, I made sure to off the convolution reverb effect so that only the EQ was applied.

Voice from an underground cave

I googled 'echo cave sound' in Google and Echo Caves came up. I watched the video and used the sounds in that video as a reference. Caves have very uneven echo and so the reverb must be stronger than the toilet reverb.

Alien/Orc voice

Aliens and Orcs. I wanted to make an alien voice, and I wanted it to be as unrecognizable as possible. So I added an analog delay to the voice, making it have feedback. I also distorted the voice to make it sound more inhumane. The pitch was shifted lower too. Basically, I slapped on a few effects onto the voice line to make it sound unrecognizable. But if the original voice line was known, you'd still be able to tell what was being said.

Reflection

I had a fairly good experience with this task. All I needed to know about what to do was shown in the tutorial and if I had further questions I just Googled it.

My observation with this task is that when using Premiere Pro, it is good to organize. Especially when you have 20-plus audio clips. I now understand why we were always asked to create folders for our work.

Finally, I found out that audio editing can be fun of you know what you are doing and when you are doing it for fun. Other than that, I also learned how to pitch shift and edit audio into audio-less clips (time to start an ASMR channel).
