Project 4 Self-Titled

For this project, we were required to make a poster that expresses my own individuality and reflects my personality in digital art as a form of self-expression. The main idea of this project is to build up self-confidence and discover our interests.

1. Idea Development

I used the slides that Mr. Fauzi gave as a template to write my bio and statement. This of course helped me to come up with ideas.

1. Write a biography about yourself

 INTRO
My name is Janice. I will be 20 years old on November 12. I am very camera shy but I’m trying to get better at it.

PARAGRAPH 1
I am introverted but act very extroverted with the people I am close with. I like cats and have visited the same cat cafe 3 times cause I do not know any other cat cafes. I value responsibility and honesty in a person, but I also have a hard time saying no to other people :D. After a tough day of socializing, I like to come home and do nothing.

PARAGRAPH 2
My hobbies include watching any kind of movies or TV shows, sewing, and baking. I like learning new skills in my free time because I have no pressure to excel at them and can work at my own pace. Sometimes when I work I like to listen to documentaries or videos essays and podcasts.

SUMMARY
I am very indecisive and can’t say no. My love for cats will outlive me.

2. Write a statement about your work

 INTRO
I would like to explore about my thoughts on my life in the poster.

PARAGRAPH 1
I like flowers and meadows, I guess you can say I like that cottagecore aesthetic. That's why I tried to dress up to fit that aesthetic when I was snapping a photo of myself. Sometimes, I would lay in bed and think ‘wow, I am doing nothing with my life’. That sometimes keeps me awake.

PARAGRAPH 2
As mentioned before, I like the cottagrcore aesthetic. I also wanted to make the poster look kind of like a magazine cover or something like that.

SUMMARY
I want to find out what to do with my life but I don’t know yet.

2. Design Direction

As mentioned before, I wanted to make something like a magazine cover/collage.

Figure 1.5 Photos used

I set the background with the daisies imaged. After that, I used the square selection tool and copied a square section of the background before pasting it on a new layer to make it look like a door. After that, I change the background into a smart object and changed it into black and white. I added a new solid layer that was blue in colour, which I later applied a pollinate effect onto the layer and changed the blending mode to hard mix and messed with the opacity till I got the effect I liked. I followed this VIDEO.

I later cut out me, the sunflower and the butterfly from the images and added it to the poster.

3. Execution and Post Production

I then imported my Photoshop file into After Effects.

Figure 1.6 After Effects Process

I pre-composed the layer where I was black and white and followed this VIDEO to create a glitch effect. After that, I trashed the file and redid the whole thing again because it was messy :D. I created a new file and redid the glitch effect but this time, I actually understood how to open a new composition file and did it there.

After creating the glitch effect, I used the position, rotation, scale, and puppet tool to animate both butterflies. I wanted to add more movement to the poster, so I put a glitch effect on the blue monotone background.

After that, I animated the font following this VIDEO to create the drip effect. I forgot to mention, but the font used is called RETRO COOL

Moving on, I took the song Derealization by Bambi Baker on YouTube, and put the link into a YouTube to MP4 converter hahaha cough definitely not illegal and uploaded it into AE. After that, I cut the audio clip, put timeframes for the audio, and added some effects into it to get something that I was ok with.

After rendering it I realised the transition from normal to glitch was awkward so I added a glitch transition from a green screen video

Channelling Alice in Wonderland, I am walking into a colourful place with flowers and a blue sky. Outside of ‘Wonderland’ is a monotonous scene. Life is not real. Every day I wake up, I eat, I do work, I sleep and then one day I will die. I barely do any of my hobbies nowadays and only do school and doom scroll on the internet. Is life real or fake, hell if I know? This poster is me going through a crisis at how uneventful and meaningless my life is because of my non-existent social life. The colourful world symbolizes the things I want to do, while the monotonous world is things that I must do. Colourful me is looking at monotone me while monotone me is ‘looking’ at the camera to show that I am present for the stuff I need to do but not for the things that I want to do because I’m too distracted by the stuff that has to be done.

Feedback

Week 14 : Sir said maybe I can try omitting the BnW version of me from the video. After doing that, I asked my friends which one they liked more and most of them said they liked the one without the BnW me so I chose that too.

Reflection

My experience with this project was decent. Mr Fauzi gave us the basics for each of the software and then the rest was up to us. This of course gave us a lot of creative liberty and allowed me to also learn new things at my own pace. I learned a lot about After Effects from this assignment such as how to use a displacement map, the puppet tool, and the effects presets in AE.

My observation with this project is that After Effects is not that hard to use if you know what you are doing. Of course, I do not know what I am doing, but with the help of some really detailed and helpful YouTube videos, I manage to figure things out.

My findings for this project are that photo editing and video editing are fun. I get to change a picture into something else and then animate it into anything I want. Talk about catfishing to the max.
