Project 3 Triptych

1. 3 Act-structure

We were briefed by Ms Anis on the 3 act-structure which we needed to use for our digital triptych.

After the brief, we were asked to choose a short story from this link. The short story I choose was 'The Black Cat' which tells a story about a man who is going mad and kills his wife and blames it on his cat.

Figure 2.2 The Black Cat 3 Act Structure
  • Set-up : Once upon a time, there was a boy who was docile but loved animals. He grew up and managed to meet a girl who also likes animals and they got married. They had dogs and a cat named Pluto as pets. However as the man grew he became abusive and started to slowly lose his mind, becoming more perverse by the day. Every day, he lived with the feeling at the back of his head that told him what he was doing is wrong. But he still abused his wife and dogs. Pluto however the narrator loved and never did any evil deeds towards Pluto.
  • Conflict : One day the men got home drunk and Pluto avoided him. The men got angry and decided to cut out Pluto's eyes with his pocket knife. Because of that Pluto avoided him more, which made the men more and more irritated with Pluto. Because of that the man decided to kill Pluto and hung Pluto's body up on a tree. After he killed Pluto, his house burned down, but miraculously one wall remain intact with the image of a giant cat with a noose drawn onto said wall.
  • Resolution : After that, the man found another cat that looked like Pluto but had white fur on its chest. The new cat loved the man but the man found it disgusting and hated it. Until finally, he lost his mind and took an ax to try and kill the cat again. His wife stopped him but he killed her and she said bye-bye. He put the body in the walls and mistakenly trapped the cat in there too the police found the body with the cat meowing loudly in the walls.

3. Triptych

I choose the story 'The Black Cat' and thought oooooh cat I like cats let's do cat. Turns out the guy murders the cat and blames it on the cat itself. FUNNNNN.

The protag is an unnamed man who slowly goes mad. The antagonist in the protag eyes is the black cat but that's entirely up to the reader me think. The conflict in this story is that the protag is slowly going mad.

I started off with some sketches . I had a general idea of what I wanted the triptych to look like and was going to base the colors off Theo D'Orata's work.

I decided to make the protagonist a silhouette to show how much of a terrible person he is. I first used the pen tool to outline the silhouette from my sketch and then went online and found a liquid texture image. After that, I imaged traced the image and changed the colour to fit the drawing. I then clipped the image to the silhouette.

The cat in the second image was 1st made by tracing the sketch with the brush tool. After that, I filled it with the pen tool. To obtain the effect in the drawing, I used the radial blur effect. There is so a grain texture added in the background. Other than that, I also overlayed or was it multiply (I forgot) a liquid texture on top of the image to give it an eerie feel.

The last image is pretty straightforward. I traced everything from my sketch with a pen and brush tool. The only thing that is technical is the brick wall, which I inserted the same way as the silhouette in the 1st image. The cat also has the blur filter on.

Figure 2.11 Different Situations

The 3 artworks are set in front of a wall because in the rising action and ending a wall is involved so I thought it would be nice to add the wall in. I tried to transition the artwork from mainly cold colors to warmer colours to signify danger. But the silhouette of the man is red at the beginning to show that he is going mad and is a danger to the people around him. I asked my friends which saturation some said the dark one cause it fit the vibes but most of them choose the brighter one so I went with that.

I made the light cast in the drawing line up with each other so it looked related.

Reflection

My experience with this triptych was a bit stressful. I was working on this alongside typo and dpi as well as my mpu sub. But I had fun reading about Edger Allen Poe's work and making an artwork on it. I also had fun incorporating a visual narrative into my artwork (oooo the name of the sub ooo). On the other hand, using Ai for this project made my laptop lag so much I think it briefly saw god. I'm pretty sure I could use my laptop as a heater for my wet clothes with how hot it got. Look at me complaining about Ai again.

My observations for this task were that coming up with a good flow for the triptych is hard. I had like a few drafts that did not make it in here cause they did not make sense and looked weird. I also observed that using the right colours in your artwork can really change the vibe of the drawing. It is also nice to play around with how high I ca bump up the saturation without the drawing looking too off.

This project was honestly quite fine but also very stressful. It helped me utilize all the skills that I have learned about Ai so far to create an artwork that could tell a story. So yeah.
