Instructions
Task
For this task, we were to pick an SDG that we like, research it and then
make a poster out of it based on the research. The poster was then to be
submitted to Maybank for their
myTigers
competition.
1. Research
I had chosen SDG 15 (Life on Land). Ms Anis asked us to do some research on
the goal we had chosen. I initially wanted to make a poster about Invasive
Alien Species(IAV). Yes, that is their name, it has aliens in it. I did some
research and found out about red-ear sliders, a kind of turtle that is
brought into Malaysia to trade as exotic pets. However, these species are
very harmful to the local turtles and are highly adaptive to the local
environment. They will compete with the local species and reduce the
population of the local turtles.

My initial visual reference is as below.

However, after I started on the poster I realized that I did not like it
and it wasn't going to work out in the time frame I was given to
complete it. So I changed my topic to tigers. Some of the visual
references fro the poster are below. Because I change last minute,
did not get to document my research. Research compilation will be added
later.
Figure 2.1 Initial Poster
Above is the initial poster with the red-eared slider. It wasn't going
well so I abandoned ship.
The theme of the 2nd poster was to show a tiger cub who has lost their
mom and sibling. Due to the hot weather *cough* global warming *cough*
they went into the water. Now motherless and homeless(due to
deforestation) they have no direction. To show that humanity still has
some integrity, I showed an animal rescuer reaching out to the tiger
cub trying to rescue it(creative liberties were taken, let's hope the
tiger cub doesn't bite off their hands). At the side of the tiger cub
is their dead mother and sibling leading them to safety.
The colour pallete was
taken from
colour hunt.

For the tigers, I used shapes to trace out the silhouette of the tiger based on the reference I collected. After I got the general shape I unified the shapes and then went in with the pencil tool to draw on the small details like the hair. The stripes are done with the brush tool. The water surface is done with the shapes tool and I went in with the pencil tool and quick selection tool to make them the shape they are. After that, I used the pencil tool to draw on the shadows of the water. I applied gaussian blur onto the hand and the ghost tigers (stronger blur on the hand) to keep the focus on the tiger cub.

Reflection
My experience throughout this project is that I should not change my
idea last minute. I would not have enough time to carry out research
on the topic. I have also learned that I should not focus too much
time on the research part of the project, instead, I should have
gotten started with the design early on. Oh well.
My observation during this task is that I have no ideas. I don't know
I just find it hard to come up with stuff. Anyway, I realized that
having a clear, rough sketch of what you want to do with the drawing
is important when using Ai. Ai is hard to use so having a very strong
idea of how you want the end product to look like is important. At
least for me.
My finding is that I just released I should have made the hand bigger
0-o. I found it hard to incorporate 3D elements into
an illustration so I left the 3D elements out. But I also released that AI has a lot of tools that can help you make vector images, like the pencil tool, I def abused that tool.
