Project 1- Self-portrait
Project 1- Self-portrait
Brief recap
We were asked to create a self-portrait based on our own
self-expression while also incorporating the design principles we have
learnt in Exercises into our portrait. We were also asked to observe the
people and things around us to get some inspiration. we were given 3
weeks to complete this project and permitted to use any medium.

Idea exploration
I wanted to re-draw myself in the album cover of one of the song
that I currently like, that is 'Everything' by The Black Skirts. This song mainly talks about love and
cherishing that love. I like this song mainly because it reminds me
of some of my favorite characters.
I also wanted to incorporate a bit of 'me' into the drawing so I
decided to put pictures of things I like in the background. One of
them being Cat-Jesus and the other being a rainbow pin from my
favorite show 'Derry Girls'.
I couloured in the base colours to try and differentiate the values
between the subject, me, and the background. I ended up with giving
the subject a blue tone and the background darker shades of
green. The blue skin tone was inspired by Emily from 'Corpse
Bride'.
Final Outcome
I decided to make myself, the two people in the drawing, more
bluish for contrast because I wanted me to stand out, while
also evoking a more muted, and colder feeling to match the vibes
of the song. I had initially wanted to put more picture frames in
the background but it looked messy so I chose to put three to
achieve a more balanced look. I decided to use the things
in my house as the background, so the thing in the background is a
piano in my house. The spotlight is placed on my face and the
pictures to place emphasis on them.
There are two of me in the drawings, and I am marrying myself. One
of me is dressed more masculine and the other more feminine. I felt
like this could represent me and my gender identity. For me, gender
is non-binary. That is why me marrying myself represents me finally
accepting that. And with the 'union' of my masculine and feminine
sides, another type of gender identity is present, one that is not
'male' or 'female' but is also 'male' and 'female'. This how I feel
most times, not really being male or female, but also being those
things. However, who knows maybe the current me would have different
thoughts and identities in the future, so I think that the current
me should accept me now and be on with life.
One of the picture frame was left empty because that is for future
me to fill up.

Week 4
No particular feedback.
Reflection
My initial question when doing this project is "what can be
considered a self-portrait? Must your face be in it?". I soon found
out that a self-portrait can be anything as long as you can see your
own self in it and it doesn't have to be in a literal sense. After
finding this out, my next question was "what do I like? How do I
act? Who am I?". This part took some time to figure out but this
gave me a chance to truly explore my values, identity and the things
I like. After the little self-reflection, I tried my best to
incorporate those things into a single design and came up with the
final product.
